Islam Is Not The Black Man's Religion

Ever since The Honorable Elijah Muhammed came to America, Islam has been linked to Blackness in America. Black Nationalists shed their Christian names and replaced it with an X until they could make the pilgrimage to Mecca to take Islamic names. Names like Abdul, Khareem, and Raashid became associated in our culture with large Black men with shoulder width Afros. The name of Allah in America, until 9/11, was linked more with The Nation of Islam than Middle Easterners or terrorism. It conjured up images of well-groomed Black men in suits and bow ties selling bean pies on the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd along with the latest edition of Final Call. But Islam is no more the Black man's religion than Christianity is.

Arab traders and travelers came to northern Africa sometime during the mid-seventh century A.D., only a few decades after the Prophet Muhammad moved with his followers from Mecca to Medina, and began to spread the Islamic religion along the eastern coast of Africa and to the western and central Sudan between the eighth and ninth centuries. Islam spread throughout Africa gradually bringing with it the art of writing, Arab architectural techniques, and the Arab language which eventually merged with the Bantu languages to form Swahili. Conversion into Islam by Black African chieftains was used to gain political support from Arab leaders and to establish trade relationships. Among the the common people it was used to avoid being sold into slavery.

Eight centuries before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade began, Arab slave traders invaded Africa in search of slaves and concubines. While the Trans-Atlantic slave trade lasted 300 years the Trans-Saharan slave trade lasted nearly 1400 years continuing into the Twentieth century. By the time of the Ottoman Empire, the majority of slaves in Islamic countries were obtained by raiding Africa. These raids of African countries were directly responsible for the rapid expansion of Islam across North Africa.

Slavery continued in Saudi Arabia until as late as 1962. While Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad were in America demonizing the White man for slavery, Islamics in Saudi Arabia still owned African slaves. Even today, African women are kidnapped as sex slaves to be sold into prostitution. As horrific as slavery was in Europe and the Americas the Islamic slave trade was as bad or worse. Mortality rates for slaves being transported across the Sahara desert to the Islamic empire have been estimated to be as high as ninety percent.

Eunuchs were especially prized for bodyguards and confidential servants and so fetched higher prices than other males, encouraging the castration of slaves at the borders of the Islamic Empire before being exported. This was done outside Islamic borders since Islamic law did not permit the mutilation of slaves. Women were used as concubines since Islamic law entitled Muslim men to use slaves for sexual pleasure. If they became pregnant their children were usually killed. Unlike slaves in the Americas, in Islamic countries slaves were not allowed to marry other slaves and raise families. Most of the male slaves were castrated and were either used as soldiers or as harem guards while the women were almost exclusively used as sex slaves and concubines unlike America where African slaves were mostly purchased for agricultural work and as domestics servants.

This is how Islam became an African religion. It was forced upon us by slave traders hunting for Black flesh for sexual exploitation, to swell the ranks of their armies, and for use as bodyguards to secure their harems of stolen African women. Just as Christianity was forced upon Africans at the end of a gun, Islam came on the point of a sword. Why then do so many Black people believe Islam to be the true religion of African people when it is not an indigenous religion but rather one adopted by African leaders in order to increase their profit and power and forced upon poor Africans by Arab raiders?

The proliferation of Islam in Africa, just like that of Christianity among Black Americans, is yet another example of the conquered adopting the religion of their conquerors. Just as with Christianity, had Africans not fallen prey to Arab slave traders, had Arabs never acquired a taste for Nubian slaves, far fewer of the millions of devout Muslims in Africa would be Muslims today.

The same absurdities and immorality inherent in the Christian bible are also present in The Koran. This comes as little surprise since Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all evolved from the same Abrahamic text. The same ridiculous creation myths exist in Islam as in Christianity and Judaism. The same reliance on faith over reason, dogma over empirical evidence. Sexism and homophobia are even greater under Islam. Islam, like Christianity, relies on fear and intimidation. "Love me or suffer eternal torment!" said God. It has the same insecure god-figure that requires constant praise and adoration from beings that are supposed to be like gnats in comparison to it in terms of intellect. Personally, I could give less than a fuck whether or not I was worshipped by gnats but then, I'm a pretty secure brotha. It has the same inexplicable dilemma of how an all-powerful, all-knowing, good and loving God could produce a creation so full of misery and suffering. The same problem of explaining why God intervened two thousand years ago to lead the Jews out of Egypt but allowed African Americans to suffer slavery and oppression for four hundred years in Europe and America and over a millennia in the Middle East. In terms of logic, morality, and overall efficacy, it is no better than Christianity.

    5. I wonder if this article was written by a white man or one completely duped by one. Atheism is a greek concept popularized by Europeans during the enlightenment. There is no tradition of Atheism in the history of Africa. So what are you doing? Your subtitle is a false dichotomy. Faith and reason are not inherently opposed. Also you must have faith in your Western intellectuals’ world view and belief in an 18th Century concept of rationalism which is a specific (rigid and limited) way of looking at the world.
Your explanation of history is childish and superficial. When did Arabs convert any Africans to Islam by the point of a sword? How specifically did, Ethiopia, Somalia, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Chad etc., become Muslim? Your main error is that you never defined an Arab. Arab is a language grouping from the Afroasiatic language family. Historians and Geologists for centuries have been aware that the original Arabs were black, Arabia has long been considered the north eastern part of Africa. It was a colony of Ethiopia centuries before Muhammad was born. Finally, your rational mind can’t understand that all is one. Reverence for Allah is reverence for the earth, the cosmos, all organisms and life-systems.
This is why the black man is God which the Qur’an and Elijah Muhammad taught years before you were born. So to say you don’t believe in God means you don’t believe in yourself…If indeed you are black.

  2. It appears that an atheist does not follow a reveal religion but submits to their natural leanings toward principles and right conduct. This is the nature in which the Black Man and Woman were created. This is "true Islam". The Arabs were given a structured form of our natural law which we perfected for them and called it "Islam". Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that it grieved him that three generations from him would not be of him. The Arabs and Blacks taught by the Arabs have fulfilled that prediction and have used the name of our natural law to shield their "dirty religion" under that name Islam. Islam is a religion for them, it is our nature for us.

Wow. So you say that the very tendencies and methods (logic, reasoning, comparing religions) that lead people to conclude revealed religions are man-made fabrications and absurd, are actually religious tendencies, to be exact, Islamic tendencies?

No wonder NOI guys wear bow ties. It makes what comes out of your mouth seems slightly less silly by comparison.

Did the arabs not plagiarize (along with the jews n christians) african spiritual belief systems, water them down n so on ?.. Ain't that hard to grasp what he was sayin. THIS is what the muslims mean when they say Abraham practiced "submission to the will of God".. I guess saying it all drawn out is better than a word symbolizing that ACTION. I.e. Islam lol

    1. The 1st thing the writer needs to know is that Prophet Muhammad's Ancestral Grandmother Hajar (or Hagar) was an African, therefore Black. The 2nd thing he needs to know is that not all Arabs are Muslims. The 3rd thing he needs to correct is that "conquers and conquered" idea of Islam. As he sees right before his eyes Islam spreading in America and there are no Arabs or Muslims conquering anybody here.

    2. CREATION

In addition, there is a vast difference between the story of Creation in the Bible and Qur'an. The only similarity is that God created the heavens and the earth, except that in the Qur'an creation is described scientifically. The Qur'an says that God made a sound. A sound is a "vibration", motion. When you hear a word it is a vibration on your ear. You do not "see" any words. Now hen vibration work against each other you get friction and friction creates heat and heat makes FIRE. And what is an Atom but "motion"? When every you see a picture of atoms, you see a drawing of motion. Anyway, the Qur'an says "it was all one unit of creation and He burst it asunder!" and balls of fire went hurtling into space and the larger bodies grabbed the smaller bodies in their orbits and God had created gravity As the smaller bodies cooled, the smoke emitted was gases and some of these gases combined to make water. H2O. And from water God created Life

    3. I don't know how the writer can blame Slavery in America on the Arabs. Most of us who trace our history back to slavery woke up with European names, not Arab or African names. And, we also woke up with the "white man's religion", not Islam. Although many muslims were brought here (forefully) as slaves, because most of us came from West Africa, muslim lands. Folks like to say that Africans and/or Arabs SOLD us into slavery but that is a bunch of crap. Would a robber go into a 7/11 with a gun and then BUY what he wants? Europeans came into West Africa with BIBLES, GUNS and CHAINS, and captured us and brought us first to the islands and then took the babies to North America and raised them as slaves. That's why we were so docile for so long. We were raised as IGNORANT SLAVES. We were not allowed to read [by Law] for 300 years! We woke up with the white man's names and his religion and as soon as we learned to read, we went looking for someone else to blame instead of the white man, who raped us, lynched us, burned our homes, abused our women and children, all in the name of his religion and his Bible. But we don't blame him. We blame the Arabs!

    4. Slavery is a touchy (and emotional) subject for most African Americans, and studies have shown that oppressed people tend to begin to love and emulate their oppressors. So our love for the slave master and his children causes us to look for excuses for him and his progeny. As a result many of us point fingers at the Arabs and Africans, knowing full well that it was the Europeans who treated us like animals or worse! Yet we need to understand that slavery was not invented in America or Arabia. Slavery, like prostitution is as old as man himself. If we would research slavery in Europe, instead of just Africa and Arabia we would find that slavery existed there as well. Some nations like Checko-slavakia and Yugoslavia still have "slave" in their names. But we ignore that fact. We never mention slavery in Europe. Now as far as Islam is concerned, one of the earliest companions of the Prophet Muhammad was a slave named Bilal from Africa;. but note, he knew his name and his history. Amnesia was not imposed upon him by the Arabs as it was imposed on us by the Americans. It should also be noted that a number of slaves were freed by Islam and they were not all Black. The slavery we suffered in America was the worst atrocity ever inflected on man by man. There never was anything like American slavery in the annals of history. Never. Lets not kid ourselves about what happened to us here in this land by trying to insinuate that it is somehow the fault of the Arabs or anyone else for that matter.

    5. Obviously, you did not read the essay carefully enough. It does not state anywhere that Arabs were responsible for slavery in America. What it does is compare and contrast slavery in America with slavery in the Arab nations with the conclusion that slavery in the Arab nations was worse in many ways. As stated, male slaves in Muslim countries were usually castrated. Female slaves were used almost exclusively for sex. There is no denying that slavery in America was horrendous, but slavery in Islamic nations was equally abominable. And, like Christianity, the religion of Islam was introduced to Africans under threat of violence. That slavery existed elsewhere and at other times is neither the point nor under contest. Yes, slavery existed for thousands of years before Islam and Christianity. So what? How is that even remotely relevant? The point is that, like Christianity, Islam would not have spread as far or as wide without marauding armies to spread it.

    2. Wrath points to the ugly facts of Islamic slave trade of Africans, frequently involving castration of Black males intended as bodyguards for harems. Black nationalists in the USA frequently speak of white people's fear of black sexuality. But not oto many ever discuss Muslims hacking off cocks and balls as a case of fear of black sexuality. Bear in mind that this castration caused over 90% of those Black boys and men who were made to suffer it to die horribly from fever, hemorrage and infection...This is what Wrath wants people to be more aware of yet your answer is limited to his use of the word "Koran"?

Both words are commonly found and used. "Koran" and "Qur'an". If you want to argue that the word "Qur'an" is more linguistically correct, that is one thing, but you need to give reasons as both variations are commonly used. Or you should at least argue why "Koran" is the so-called "dishonest" translation. But to casually label Wrath as a dishonest person for using a very common variation of "Qur'an" is transparent slander and wholly unjustified. In any case, complaining about his usage of "Koran"is a rather limp-wristed observation to make if you think about the seriousness of what Wrath wants to discuss.

Mohammad called blacks pug-nosed raisinheads that are harder to teach than animals (ie. just plain dumb)! He had his own slaves and even traded them. There is nothing pro-black in Islam. When will people start reading what's there in the quran and hadiths and stop making up some sort of fantasy about what they WANT islam to be.

    1. Shame on you Lola. Why lie on Prophet Muhammad who never had any slaves. When he married Lady Khadijah, for whom he was once employed, she gave him a slave named Zaid and he immediately freed him. Not only that, when the Qur'an was revealed to him, one of his closest companions was an ex-slave named Bilal who became the 1st caller to prayer and he was also what today would be called the Minister of Finance as he handled the Prophet's financial accounts. Before you criticize the religion read a reliable history of the religion.

    2. According to Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya, Muhammad "had many male and female slaves. He used to buy and sell them, but he purchased more than he sold, especially after God empowered him by His message, as well as after his immigration from Mecca. He once sold one black slave for two. His name was Jacob al-Mudbir. His purchases of slaves were more. He was used to renting out and hiring many slaves, but he hired more slaves than he rented out". (Source: Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya; Jalal Abualrub (English translator); Alsa Mencke and Shaheed M. Ali (Editors) (2003 (2nd Edition)). [[Zad al-Ma'ad|Zad-ul Ma'ad fi Hadyi Khairi-l 'Ibad]] (Provisions for the Hereafter), part 1. Islamic Learning Media Publications. p. 160. ISBN 0-9703766-0-X. )

The names and basic biographical details of some notable among those slaves are disclosed in early Islamic literature. Many additionally are themselves historical sources cited as narrators of hadith. (According to Aydin) Abu Asib, Abu Bakra, Abu Muwayhiba, Abu Rafi, Abu Sallam, Abu Ubayd, Ayman, Mariya, Maymuna bint Abu Asib, Maymuna bint Sa'd, Mihran, Nafi, Safina, Salman, Thawban, Sirin, Salma, Shamghun, Shukran, Umm Ayyash, Usama, Zayd, and Zayd ibn Harisa)
You already named an example of a slave Muhammad freed immediately. But if you think that Muhammad immediately freed his own slaves, consider the following example of a slave who worked for Muhammad and was not freed until after Muhammad died:
Safeenah ibn Farookh, whose real name was Mihraan, is reported to have been named thus ("Anta safeenah (You are a ship)") by Muhammad because he and his companions used to make him carry heavy amounts of their luggage when they traveled. He was bought by Umm Salamah, and was freed upon Muhammad's death. (Source: Zad al-Ma'ad, Part 1, pp.114–116 as cited in Abdul-Rahman, Muhammad Saed (2004). Jurisprudence and Islamic Rulings: Transactions - Part 5)

Rayhāna bint Zayd ibn ʿAmr was enslaved by Muhammad and died as a slave. (Source: The Life of Muhammad: A Translation of Ibn Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah, p. 466. Oxford University Press, 1955. ISBN 0-19-636033-1)

I could go on, but this post is long enough to give honest people the impression that Muhammad enslaved people, freed some of his slaves, gave away some of his slaves to new owners, sold some of his slaves, and kept some slaves until he died. A typical slave-owner, really. Lincoln he was not ;)

  11. All religions are unhealthy but as a woman of color, I have to say that we are so brainwashed to believe. My friends feel like they are liberated from eurocentric culture. Yet they remain 'spiritual' They are either practicing Indigenous African, Native American or some kind of pre-judeo-christian religion. They most confusing are the friends who are into Egyptian spirituality and Mayan or Aztec/Mexica religion. These folks depended on enslavement of others to build their pyramids and work their fields.

And ALL have had savage aspects in their culture, i.e., mass murders/sacrifices of humans and massacres of the smaller villages around them in order to dominate and lay claim to more land and power AND enslaved humans.

I just ordered a book from the library called, 'The Believing Brain' I hope it will shed some insight on how my sisters and brothers of color are so dependent on religion/spirituality instead of being more self-reliant, realistic and rational.

Didn't Islamic extremists cultivate relations with the US black civil rights movement in order to undermine the American establishment, which they saw as the puppet of their enemy, the American Jewish Zionist ?
Wasn't it just about befriending their enemy's enemy ?
Presumably, the hope was to create political instability in the US and ultimately, somehow weaken Jewish American influence in Palestine.
The civil rights movement I'm guessing, was happy to take the Islamist support (financial and political) and change Christian surnames for Islamic ones.

Being a cult leader who is inspirational to cult followers is not really something to brag about. Cult followers create cults of personality around the leader.

Black people in America desperately jumping from one religion to the next, looking for some divine father figure that will solve all their problems is a delusion that has long held our people back and kept us enslaved. True liberation begins in the mind and must include freedom from these master/slave ideologies that reinforce the idea that we must grovel and beg some greater authority for help we are perfectly capable of giving ourselves.
